Our pupils recently took part in ‘No Dig November’, an initiative that promotes eco-friendly gardening practices. The “No Dig” method involves covering soil with layers of cardboard and compost rather than turning it over. This approach helps protect soil structure, encourages beneficial organisms, reduces weeds, and improves overall soil health — making it a great way to grow vegetables sustainably.
With guidance from Sharon and Biruk from New Leaf Compost, pupils worked together to prepare the beds by laying cardboard and adding compost on top. They demonstrated fantastic teamwork, filling wheelbarrows and transporting compost to the planting areas.
Once the beds were ready, a variety of winter vegetables were planted, including beans, peas, broccoli, lettuce, garlic, onions, parsnips, and coriander. This hands-on experience not only supports biodiversity but also teaches pupils about sustainable food production.
