Our student councillors were treated to a fascinating and inspiring experience that brought local government and civic history to life, when they visited Belfast City Hall.
The day began with a guided tour of the grand building, where students were shown a stunning tapestry that beautifully illustrates the rich and complex history of Belfast. As they moved through the halls, they admired a collection of paintings depicting former Lord Mayors, each one offering a glimpse into the city’s leadership over the years.
One of the highlights of the visit was stepping into the debating chambers, where real council decisions are made. Students had the unique opportunity to sit in the very seats where representatives from different political parties gather to discuss and shape the future of the city. This hands-on experience gave them a deeper appreciation for the democratic process. Adding a touch of tradition and fun, some students even got to try on the official ceremonial robes worn by council members—an experience that sparked plenty of smiles! The group was also honoured to meet Deputy Lord Mayor Doherty, who warmly welcomed the students. The visit concluded with a tour of the new interactive City Hall exhibition.
The trip was a memorable blend of education, inspiration, and fun—an experience that deepened students’ understanding of local government and their role as young leaders in the community.
