P6 pupils got on their bikes to take part in some National Standard Cycle Training. This training was provided free of charge by Sustrans Sustainable Transport Charity with whom we have secured a three-year partnership.
During the playground-based sessions, Gerry and Colm the trainers, were able to assess the children’s basic bike-handling skills. Pupils were then given the opportunity to practise starting and stopping safely, manoeuvring, signalling and using gears. They were also given advice on the appropriate footwear and clothing and general biking etiquette.
This was followed by some real cycling experience on local roads were the pupils had to put into practice their newly acquired skills and knowledge. Hopefully this training has given these pupils the know-how and the confidence to ride their bicycles safely to school and encourage them to do so on a regular basis.
